  • 1985.8#7dX. This type of frozen overflow is called Aufeis. Some years in Alaska this ice will persist over shallow rivers, seeps and on the tundra, lasting through the summer into winter. Caribou will gravitate to these places to escape the heat and flies. One of many really special things I got to see on the "Magic Carpet Rides" in the Super Cub with my buddy Rich G. Brooks Range, Alaska.

This was my first bush adventure bear hunting with my buddy Joe Romero. We flew commercially from Anchorage to Dillingham where he knew the pilot with the Taylorcraft and he flew us out here to Kulakak Bay in Western Alaska.
