  • PA-2020.9.14#0472.3. The historic Golden Pheasant Inn. The land on which the origonal Tavern was built was part of the London Company Land Grant and became part of Arthur Erwin's land in 1769. Arthur helped George Washington cross the Delaware in 1776 and was later killed in the line of duty in 1791. Arthur Erwin's family sold the 46 acres the Golden Pheasant now stands on in 1801. Joseph Haney acquired the land in 1811 and applied for a Tavern license. Haney died in 1828 and the land and Tavern that he built are bought by Patrick Mulvaney. When he acquired his tavern license he called it Waterman's Inn. The Delaware canal was already under construction and opened in 1832. it ran right through Mulvaney's property. Business prospered all up and down the River. The Tavern changed hands three more times and burned to the ground in 1876. It was rebuilt and is pretty much the building that stands today. It changed hands at least 6 more times and is currently owned by Jack Thompson who also owns the Black Bass Hotel. Located on River Road a little south of Erwina Pennsylvania. All of my Grand kids have worked in the Inn when they were growing up.
