  • PA-DURHAM TOWNSHIP, DURHAM CAVES 2019.5.24#058.2. The Cave is now a protected area as a sanctuary for endangered Bats. For century's before the first European settler's arrived here in the 1600's the Lenni Lenape used these caves for shelter. The Durham Furnace's and Mill overwhelmed this area in the 1700's and 1800's smelting iron and grinding grain. Limestone rock was mined right in front of these caves. Some of this limestone was processed in Kilns very near here. The rest was boated down the Delaware canal to Uhlerstown and a few other localities. Kilns are viewable behind the Uhlerstown Covered Bridge where the limestone was turned into fertilizer. In more recent years a Paper Mill was built near this site that has been closed down now.
