It contains no chlorophyll and is a parasite that gets its nutrients from fungi, trees and decaying plant material. It is sometimes associated with Beech trees. This plant was found and photographed by Guy J. in Penns Woods, Pennsylvania. I have never seen one of these myself. I scanned and salvaged it from a 4x6 photo Guy gave me.

They are a favorite food item of the Whitetail Deer in early spring. A unique and interesting feature is how their seeds are spread. It is called myrmecochory. It refers to ant-mediated dispersal.
