  • AK-ALASKA PENINSULA-BELKOFSKI 1984.5#42. The Holy Resurrection Church in Belkofski was built by the Russian Orthodox Mission. Earliest evidence of this building go back to 1879 when a church account stated their were 650 Orthodox souls living in Belkofski. The oldest printed evidence from a Sitka newspaper recognize this building in 1887. Among other unique features this is one of very few churches of the era that did not have Onion Domes. Instead it had three pyramidal cupolas. I was fortunate to get to visit this before it collapsed and was burned. The church bell and many items from inside the church were saved by the people of King Cove and now reside in Saint Herman Church in King Cove. What isn't in King Cove was taken to other Churches. Before this when it was over head it was shedding fiery debris. It was spotted by Air traffic control towers in Kenai and Anchorage. They both reported a low trajectory and that it probably crashed in Cook Inlet or the east side of the Alaska Range. In this view it has already cleared the west side of the Alaska Range and is headed for Unalakleet. I shot this from Telaquana Lake just west of the Alaska Range mountains in Alaska.
