  • AK-MON-2008.7.1#229.2. "Blue Babe", Bison priscus, the prehistoric Steppe Bison that was discovered mummified north of Fairbanks Alaska. It was discovered by placer gold miners Walter and Ruth Roman in 1979. Paleontologist Dale Guthrie supervised the excavation and reconstruction for the University of Fairbanks Museum of the North. It was killed 36.000 years ago by a prehistoric American Lion. It's blue color for which it named was the result of the white phosphate mineral coating vivianite having a reaction with the iron in the soil when it was exposed to the air. It also served as a Distant Early Warning (DEW) line covering the Arctic Circle. It became obsolete with Satellite Communication. Seward Peninsula Alaska. Four people on the far right of the ridge give some perspective to the size. This is one of only a couple of White Alice sites that the Dept. of Defense didn't dismantle in the 1970's and 80's.
